HBHansen Construction Inc. > ETERNA Building System, Bellingham Herald article, February 10, 2008.

Greenhouses aren’t much of a rarity in Whatcom County’s stormy, plant-battering climate. But a house that’s green? That’s worth mentioning.

Especially when its greenness comes from something as seemingly wasteful as the Styrofoam peanuts that protect fragile goods in the mail. Those peanuts are recycled into a cement and foam composite called Eterna, and that product makes up the bones of a Point Roberts home now under construction......

WORK HARD

When Bernie Hansen and his wife, Kristen, founded their Lynden-based construction company in 1992, they established three divisions: heavy construction, custom homes and commercial projects. He had worked five years for other contractors. He jokes about expecting more leisure time and discovering that he works harder and has less free time.

PLAY HARD

Hansen enjoys tooling around on a 34-foot Uniflite, a boat built in Bellingham, with his wife and three children in the San Juan islands. He’s also an avid fisherman and heads out on local waters whenever there’s a chance. When on vacation, he tries to set one day aside for fishing. While on a trip to Mexico last year, he delighted in catching tropical fish.

QUOTE

"Boating is a way to get away from the phone, the fax, and get out by myself. It’s quiet and a good place to relax."

THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is happening? A storage facility and major landscaping project is nearing completion.

Where is it?

At Joe Martin Field, near Civic Stadium and Lakeway Drive.

Who is doing the work?

HBHansen Construction.

How much does it cost?

About $200,000.

When will it be completed?

Sometime in January.

What is noteworthy about the project?

Along with remaking the baseball infield and the nearby picnic area, HBHansen has been building a storage facility for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department equipment, which is used for several facilities in the area, including Civic Stadium. Project Manager Tim De Bruin said hydro-seeding the picnic area on the third base side of the field will allow families to stretch out on the grass and watch the games during the summer.
